The Needles New Battery was completed in 1895 to take over coastal defences when it was feared concussion from the guns at the Old Battery would cause collapse of the cliffs. The Battery was armed with three 9.2" breech load guns. The site was closed at the end of World War 2 and between 1956-71 was used for testing the Black Knight and Black Arrow rocket engines.
