Alum Bay is renowned for its coloured sands. The name Alum comes from an important substance used in previous centuries for paper making, cloth dyeing and leather tanning. Although there is no record of Alum being produced at Alum Bay it seems likely as 16th century maps name the bay Whytfylde Chine.
