The lifeboat crew from this boathouse played an important part in the rescue of many seafarers who fell victim to the dangerous passage between the Needles and the Shingles bank. The lifeboat station was built in 1884 and closed in 1924 when the lifeboat was replaced by a motor vessel stationed at Yarmouth.
